What foods are helpful and what foods are prohibited?

In osteoarthritis, foods that will strengthen the cartilage tissue and prevent the development of the pathological process should be consumed.

The following 10 foods can be used:

  • Gelatin and cartilage – rich in protein.
  • Chicken breast – source of protein and selenium.
  • Flax seeds – source of calcium, magnesium and zinc.
  • Bananas, lentils, sardines and apricots – provide potassium.
  • Spinach – contains high levels of vitamins and antioxidants.
  • Milk – contains calcium, which strengthens bone and cartilage tissue.
  • Walnuts – source of nitrogenous substances, fibre, fats and acids and trace elements.
  • Salmon – helps keep weight in check, reduces the risk of cancer and cholesterol levels.
  • Brown rice – lowers cholesterol levels and maintains energy levels.
  • Berries and fruit – provides vitamin C and antioxidants, and helps the body produce collagen and elastin.

Patients with osteoarthritis are advised to consume rich fish broths, as they contain chondroitin sulphate. The same substance is present in synovial fluid and helps maintain the elasticity of cartilage tissue.

You must not eat:

  • cheese;
  • sausages;
  • smoked meats;
  • chicken skin;
  • alcohol;
  • pickles;
  • mayonnaise;
  • sour fruit and juices;
  • caviar.

Salt, which is an unhealthy food, should be avoided. It increases pressure and accumulates in the periarticular tissues. It is not advisable to eat foods that can cause weight gain. Foods should benefit and strengthen the body. Bad habits and alcohol should be completely avoided. A balanced diet will not completely eliminate the disease, but it will significantly improve the patient’s condition.

Fat intake should be reduced to a minimum for hip arthroplasty. It is important to maintain a balance of vitamins and minerals. Foods rich in gelatin, calcium, and potassium should be in the diet. The diet should be strictly aimed at weight loss. If the load on the hip joint is reduced, the cartilage tissue begins to regenerate more rapidly. Meals should be steamed and occasionally baked.

A sufficient quantity of carbohydrates should be consumed by the body. These can be obtained from rice, oats and buckwheat. Sunflower oil should be replaced with olive or linseed oil. Dessert can be replaced with dried fruit and natural honey. These contain a sufficient amount of complex carbohydrates and healthy micronutrients.
